Why Should I Take Resveratrol 98%?

If you have ever heard that red wine is good for you, this is often referring to a single compound that is commonly found in red wine, resveratrol! However, the resveratrol content of wine is incredibly low, so this is a bit of a myth, what is not a myth however, is that resveratrol has some incredible effects on general health. Resveratrol & The Aging Controversy

Since its discovery, resveratrol has been a controversial compound. When it was first identified in red wine, this gave red wine a major popularity boost and lots of media attention was directed at this now “miracle beverage”. Of course, this was majorly taken out of context, because there is not nearly enough resveratrol in red wine to obtain any significant resveratrol benefits. However, this positive media attention for red wine, was embraced by the wine industry and to this day, the idea that red wine will make you live longer due to its resveratrol content is still commonly littered around the internet, talk shows, magazines etc. This is a shame, because it illigitamizes the real benefits of resveratrol! 

The resveratrol story picks up even more steam when David Sinclair enters the picture. David Sinclair is a pioneer in the field of aging research, and is behind the renewed and continued interest in both resveratrol, NMN and NAD+. He is also slowly but surely turning into a wellness and longevity celebrity, having just been signed to WME, one of Hollywood’s largest talent agencies. This brings with it a host of problems, since David Sinclair is now very much in the public eye, and is still pushing for the longevity benefits of resveratrol. He sometimes steps away from the science a bit, in order to boost up his darling longevity compounds in the media. Within the scientific community, this will not stand and in September 2022, Charles Brenner, one of the driving forces behind the popularity of NR came out with a study directly contradicting David Sinclairs stance on sirtuins and resveratrol. Charles Brenner has been on the scene for a long time too, and has famously criticized NMN in favor of his darling compound, NR. To make matters even more interesting, David Sinclair now also seems to be on a path to limit the use of longevity compounds to the pharmaceutical industry, another thing Charles Brenner has called him out on recently. Overall, it’s turning into a bit of a wellness celebrity pissing match, so let’s take a step back, and let’s take a mundane and boring look at why resveratrol remains a very interesting supplement!

Alright, after having weeded through the celebrity drama, where does that leave us with resveratrol? The simple truth is, it has been studied for a very long time and there is an enormous amount of research on resveratrol, including a fantastic amount of large meta-reviews. So what have these studies and meta-reviews found? Well, resveratrol certainly will not make you immortal, however, it can certainly help you age more gracefully! This is often a common misconception in the longevity space, yes, by the strict definition we want to add years to our lives and longevity researchers take advantage of this by dosing yeasts, fruit flies or C. elegans worms with longevity compounds. They then find that the yeasts are living longer, but does this actually apply to humans? Probably not. However, there is a ton of research indicating that resveratrol can help ameliorate some common age related qualms. Resveratrol significantly upregulates the activity of SIRT-1, and this brings with it lots of benefits, such as very prominent inflammation and oxidation regulating effects. In addition to this, SIRT1 requires NAD+ to function, and while not all of  the NAD+ effects come from SIRT1 and other sirtuins, they are crucial to the overall effects of NAD+. This is why resveratrol and NAD+ precursors are often combined.

Furthermore, resveratrol also activates AMPK. When this happens at the same time as SIRT1 activation, we mimic certain aspects of fasting, which has beneficial effects on cellular energy and metabolism. In fact, resveratrol has been shown to have very beneficial effects on glucose and lipid metabolism. Another interesting effect of resveratrol, is that it helps promote bone health, something aging individuals often struggle with. This is also where resveratrols unique circadian rhythm modulating effects fit in nicely. Circadian rhythms control more than just sleep, and this is a concept that is becoming increasingly popular. By enhancing overall circadian rhythms with resveratrol, this can then bring many benefits with it, such as enhancing metabolic health and cognitive function. Circadian rhythms also become a little dysregulated as we age, and thus, resveratrol fits in perfectly here too. 

Another fascinating aspect of resveratrol is its interactions with our gut microbiota. Resveratrol has many different interactions with bacteria, and it has been shown that resveratrol can help enhance the composition of our microbiome, which can have beneficial effects on metabolic health and even brain health. Resveratrol can also turn into even more powerful compounds due to the help of these beneficial bacteria. For example, resveratrol can be fermented by gut microbiota to produce dihydro resveratrol, which appears to be even more potent than resveratrol itself. Most interestingly, because it is formed in the intestines, dihydro resveratrol can rapidly and efficiently produce effects here. In fact, it has been shown that dihydro resveratrol has fantastic effects on controlling inflammation in the intestines. 

We could keep going on about the beneficial effects of resveratrol, however, we will save this for a blog and/or podcast in the near future. The point we want to drive home here, is that perhaps the view of resveratrol as an “anti-aging” compound is faulty and myopic, and easy to disprove, because it simply will not stop aging. However, this does not mean resveratrol doesn’t produce lots of beneficial effects when we expand our scope, to a whole body, holistic approach!

    Seems good

    This doesn’t seem like a supplement you’ll acutely feel much of, maybe a bit more energy paired with nmn. But I will say that it suppresses appetite extremely well.
