Description

What is L-Pyroglutamic Acid?

L-Pyroglutamic acid is a very unique amino acid that contains a 2-oxo-pyrrolidone base structure and is produced naturally in the body from the amino acid glutamine. It can also be found in our diets and plays a role in the glutamatergic system! Although L-Pyroglutamic acid is derived from glutamine, the truth is that they are not all that similar. In fact, L-Pyroglutamic acid is more closely related to the amino acid called proline and one of the alternate names for L-Pyroglutamic acid is actually 5-oxoPROLINE!

Although it can be found in foods such as meat and eggs, relying totally on getting enough L-Pyroglutamic acid from your diet is not generally enough. L-Pyroglutamic acid is necessary for bodily function and helps promote cognitive and metabolic functions while even supporting feelings of well being.*

L-Pyroglutamic Acid Benefits & Uses

    • May help promote cognitive function*
    • May help promote focus and memory*
    • May help promote metabolic function*

The Many Benefits of L-Pyroglutamic Acid

Some of the glutamine in our bodies will eventually be converted into L-Pyroglutamic acid and this process also appears to happen in certain foods and beverages. Coffee for example, especially instant coffee, contains high levels of L-Pyroglutamic acid. A recent study showed that instant coffees contain these levels due to the glutamine content of coffee spontaneously converting to L-Pyroglutamic acid during the roasting and freeze drying process. This same study also found that L-Pyroglutamic acid has synergistic effects when taken in tandem with caffeine. While coffee provides caffeine and energy, L-Pyroglutamic acid adds an extra layer of focus and direction to that energy!*

One of the most notable benefits of L-Pyroglutamic acid is its effects on promoting cognitive function. The exact mechanisms by which this occurs is still not fully understood, but it appears to be due to interactions with the glutamatergic system. The cognition enhancing effect also appears to be partially explained by a general promotion of cellular function. Some studies have even shown that this effect helps to promote cognitive function and memory. Metabolic function does not get left behind either! There have been several studies that showed that maintaining L-Pyroglutamic acid levels helped to also support metabolic function.

This is not an amino acid you want to miss!

    Good product, fascinating compound

I do notice how it synergizes with caffeine. I add 1/3 tsp to my lemon drop yerba mate tea every morning. The taste of the powder meshes really well the tea (sour and tart). It's a big acidic to just swallow on its own or use sublingually, though. Don't expect it to "wow" you with an energy boost but it definitely works well as a subtle, but effective stimulant addition to caffeine. I'd like to learn more about this amino acid.
