KHS produces filling and packaging systems for beverage and liquid food industries. The company also supplies and develops packaging solutions and machines.

As part of the partnership, the companies aim to extend Smurfit Kappa’s TopClip recyclable solution to beverage companies using KHS’ packaging solutions and machines.

Smurfit Kappa Europe CEO Saverio Mayer said: “Our customers rely on us to provide innovative and high-quality end-to-end packaging solutions and this partnership with a technology world leader like KHS allows us to work in perfect harmony with their high-spec machine solutions.”

TopClip, which was launched last year, eliminates the use of plastic shrink wraps with a paper-based packaging.

It is designed to cover the top of can multi-packs entirely, which protects them from contamination.

Additionally, it is claimed to be 100% plastic free, with a 30% lower carbon footprint than shrink-wrap consumer packs.

This patented product offers consumer handling and branding opportunities for retailers and brands who are also seeking eco-friendly packaging, the company noted.

KHS chief sales officer Johannes Grobe said: “At KHS, we take on a pioneering role when it comes to sustainability and the TopClip product illustrates a further alternative when it comes to providing sustainable packaging solutions for retailers and brands.”

In August this year, Smurfit Kappa partnered with World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Colombia to improve forestry conservation.
